A Journey from Oxton to Fala

Tales of a Hollywood actor, the witch on Soutra, a world ploughing champion from Oxton, and the US president who named his dog after a Falahill outlaw can all be found in Henry Borthwick’s latest book, A Journey from Oxton to Fala.

A wonderful collection of accounts and memories are brought together here by author Henry Borthwick, in this detailed jigsaw documenting some of the social history of the Scottish Borders.

Henry chronicles the heroes and villains who lived in the Border parishes around where he grew up. He tells the history of its people and stories – including a plane crash, transporting sheep on the Waverley Line railway and Saint Cuthbert’s vision at Channelkirk, to name a few. He combines these stories with accounts of his own life in his beloved Borderlands.

Many of these stories have remained dormant or unprinted until now. Henry’s family has lived in the parishes of Channelkirk and Fala since 1458, and he has added some of his own memories and family history in parts. True to his farming and Borders roots, he sums his work up well, like a sheepdog rounding up stray stories before they disappear.
